Depuis l’événement inaugural en 1982, le RAAM a devenu un des premières courses du vélo dans le monde. Quand Lon, John, Mike et moi ont commencé cet événement, nous n’avons pas de tout pensé qu’il deviendrait un tel spectacle.

Rob Kish est un athlète à l’endurance phénoménale. Il a enduré tout seul plus de la douleur dans cet événement que personne ne devrait endurer dans une vie. Je lui fais toutes mes amitiés, mais je pense que Steve Larson est l’histoire la plus importante de cette année. En ce moment, il est considérablement en tête et il a l’air d’être très, très fort. J’ai roulé avec lui dans le premier jour et je l’ai trouvé le cycliste le plus équilibré des concurrents.

Mais pour garder un sens de la mesure, tout ça ne fait rien parce que Brett Malin, le coureur de l’équipe Vail, est mort tragiquement. Malin a été tué sur le deuxième jour de l’événement quand il était frappé par un camion après qu’il a tourné sur la route dans le Nouveau Mexique. Il faut que nous réfléchissons et prions pour la famille et les amis de Brett. Il faut que nous n’oublier jamais qu’il n’y a rien plus important que la vie.

Since the inaugural event in 1982, the RAAM has become one of the premier endurance bicycle races in the world. When Lon, John, Mike and I started this event in 1982, we had no idea that it was going to evolve into such a spectacle.

Rob Kish’s is a phenomenal endurance athlete, who has single-handedly endured more pain in this event than anyone should have to go through in a lifetime. I wish him well, but I think the real story this year belongs to Steve Larson, who at this writing has a substantially lead and appears very, very strong. I rode with him in the opening day and found him to be the most balanced rider in the field.

To put things in proper perspective, all of this has little meaning in light of the tragic death of team Vail rider Brett Malin. Malin was killed on the second day of the event when he was struck by a truck after making a turn on the roadway in New Mexico. Our thoughts and prayers should go to Brett’s family and friends. We can never forget that in the scheme of sport participation, nothing is more important than the preservation of life.
